Since 1975, more than 600 water/environmental professionals from developing countries have attended training courses organised by IPGL and more than 300 participants have attended workshops and conferences organised by IPGL in Eastern Africa.  Special emphasis is laid on the support of capacity enhancement processes at Eastern African institutions, which train professionals, carrying-out relevant research/extension activities and contributing to the development of evidence-based policies. A large network of collaborating institutions in Eastern Africa has been established. North-south, as well as south-south collaborations have been initiated, teaching/research laboratories have been upgraded, more than 350 Eastern Africans attended IPGL training programmes and numerous research/development projects have been implemented. The network partner institutions and programme graduates are perceived as key-agents to initiate transformation processes towards the sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems and aquatic resources in Eastern Africa and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).
