Areas of competence

Mission
With regard to its portfolio in research, environmental issues, their social and economical impacts and technical solutions are at the core of the Institute`s research activities. This is a contribution to the strategic goals of BOKU: sustainable use and management of natural resources. Increased emphasis will be laid in future on rural water management in developed as well as in developing countries.

Research areas

An overview of the more generic fields of research of the Institute is given in the following Table . Basically, each research area (Column 2) involves a group of staff members working on one or more research topics in the third column. The research topics in general do not correspond on a one-to-one basis to projects, but aggregate several projects (present and past). Research topics vary to adjust to changes in fields of interest and the availability of funding. Thus they change more rapidly than research areas, that – to certain extent – define the substructures of the institutes. As a rule, staff is involved in several projects, but most researchers and practically all technicians also participate in work in more than one research area. Therefore the sum of the number of staff involved is larger than the number of staff in the institutes and the Department.
