The long-term disposal of waste and residual materials in an environmentally responsible way still constitutes an essential element in sustainable wastemanagement. Particularly, for landfills with a high content of biodegradable organic waste (landfills for municipal solid waste) appropriate and affordable aftercare methods must be developed to achieve a quick turnover into an “environmental-neutral” state. The Institute of Waste Management (ABF-BOKU) develops (site-)appropriate technologies for emissions mitigation (e.g. in-situ aeration, methane oxidation covers) as well as aftercare and after-use concepts. A current application is the optimisation of biological degradation and humification processes in landfills by adequatetechnical measures. The investigation of degradation mechanisms and dynamics insolid waste combined with the monitoring and assessment of actual and potential emissions provides the basis for the development of adequate technical methods. The deduction of proper aftercare criteria und target values is also an important issue. Contact: Prof. Marion Huber-Humer, MSc, PhD
